I am writing a novel of historical fiction that takes place in the Lackawanna area in 1926. One of the characters is a 12 year old girl, a Seneca Indian, who runs a store with her mother and siblings. Her father left for NYC to work construction and sends money home. However, I need to make sure it would be likely for this girl and her parents to be in Lackawanna, so I need to know if there was any tribal property in the area or if the Tonowanda Band of Senecas was too far from there to be realistic.
I would also like to integrate some of their knowledge and traditions into the novel, because this character is very well-read and is supposed to be close to her traditions.
Anyone have some sources for me? Thanks!
